The DJI Osmo Mobile 7P is a subtly improved stabilisation gimbal for mobile videographers, though not everyone will love its new multifunction module — and especially what it does to the battery.
While I know plenty of you love reading (and that’s great) this is one review that does need a video element to show what the DJI Osmo 7P can and can’t do. So don’t forget to watch the video, too!
Pros | Cons |
---|---|
Good stabilisation | Android app requires APK sideloading |
Integrated tripod stand | Tripod stand legs don’t feel that strong |
Clip-on module adds lighting and audio options | Using the module saps the battery quite quickly |
Score: 3/5

DJI Osmo Mobile 7P Conclusion
Design
The latest update to its long-running DJI Osmo Mobile gimbal series, the DJI Osmo Mobile 7P – and slightly cheaper DJI Osmo Mobile 7 – is in design terms a mostly gentle reworking of what went into the DJI Osmo Mobile 6.
It’s still a stabilisation gimbal built around a magnetically attaching clasp that wraps around your Android or iOS phone of choice, powering up when unfolded and with standard recording, mode switching, trigger buttons and a zoom/focus control on the side.
One of the smaller differences between the cheaper Osmo Mobile 7 and the fancier Osmo Mobile 7P is that you get an extension telescoping head in the 7P; it’s absent in the regular Osmo Mobile 7.
Both units do get fold out tripod feet that come out with a little force applied to the base of the unit. Prior models required you to screw in a tripod – which you can still do here, because there’s still a centrally mounted tripod screw – but it’s neat to have inbuilt tripod feet. I do wonder how long they’ll last, however, as they are quite simple plastic feet.
The other big difference between the Osmo Mobile 7 and the Osmo Mobile 7P is the inclusion of a multifunctional module that enables object tracking in third party photo apps, illumination through an integrated light and pairing to the DJI Mic Mini set of microphones if you have them. This attaches to the side of the phone clamp in either orientation so that you can use it with the primary or selfie cameras depending on your use case.
Performance
Setting up the Osmo Mobile 7P does involve pairing it to a phone and then using DJI’s Mimo app for iOS or Android. One slight annoyance here is that while the iOS version sits in Apple’s App Store, DJI instead asks you to sideload the APK version of the DJI Mimo app on Android devices. Sideloading isn’t too hard to manage, but it does raise questions about updates and general security matters as well. For what it’s worth, I was able to get the DJI Mimo app working across both an iPhone 16 Pro Max and a Pixel 9 Pro – though not both at the same time.
DJI has been in the stabilisation game for a long time now through drones and gimbals and even its own mobile vlogging cameras, so it’s no surprise that its general level of stabilisation for movement is quite good; check out the video above for a simple demonstration of the difference it can make to walking or running video footage, as well as object tracking.
Gesture controls are also present, though I don’t love them all that much, simply because they’re a bit too hit and miss for my liking… and for another reason, which I’ll get to in the battery section.
The multifunction module is the real “new” star here… and I have mixed opinions on it. The integrated light certainly has potential for those who like to vlog after the sun goes down, but the light is not that large or that strong, so don’t expect miracles there.

Being able to use simpler microphone setups while shooting is technically a blessing, but it’s a blessing only if you have the DJI Mic Mini set of headphones.
Other wireless mics, including DJI’s own Mic 2 set, do not pair – or at least I couldn’t get them to pair, and this seems to be a common complaint based on my own research – which is annoying. DJI did loan me a set of the Mic Mini microphones for use while shooting this review, and while they’re nice, it would be even better if the multifunction module was even more multifunctional.
Battery
DJI states the battery life of the Osmo Mobile 7P is up to 10 hours of shooting time, but there’s a catch here, depending on your usage.
That 10 hour figure is based around just shooting with it as a stabilisation gimbal without the use of the multifuction module. Pop that on and use it extensively, and the quoted battery life drops to just 4 hours. That’s obviously going to vary depending on how often you’re using the light especially, but it’s a big old drop in battery life. DJI’s own DJI Mimo app also tends to disable gesture controls if they’re not used for a while to save battery life, which also suggests that they can also be battery hogs.
My own shooting tests haven’t really run for 10 hours – because I can’t run myself for 10 hours without needing to stop for coffee – but more anecdotally the difference that using or not using the module has on overall battery life is definitely quite pronounced. Bring along some PD-certified battery packs with you if you plan on a long overnight shoot, in other words.
DJI Osmo Mobile 7P: Alex’s Verdict
Not everyone needs a stabilisation gimbal. If you only shoot video on a very irregular basis and can put up with a little shake because you’re more shooting in the classic “home movie” style, then the Osmo Mobile 7P absolutely is overkill.
However, if you’re looking to improve your video shooting game, whether you’re a content creator or just someone who likes to dabble in such things, it mostly does what it sets out to do.
The gesture controls could be a little more precise, and I do have concerns about the durability of the tripod feet, but this is a good device if it’s your first. If you’ve already got, say, an Osmo Mobile 5 or Osmo Mobile 6, then the need to upgrade is considerably lessened.
