Quntis Monitor Light Bar HY214 Conclusion
Ethical disclaimer: Quntis sent me the Monitor Light Bar HY214 used in this review, and as always, that gets them a review… and nothing else at all.
No editorial oversight, I’m not for sale. I know plenty of folks know that already, but I feel that ethical disclosure is so often overlooked, and it is important. Now, on with the review.
Design
The Quntis Monitor Light Bar HY214 is a simply designed monitor light bar, though it’s far from Quntis’ only play. Odds are that you’ve never heard of them – neither had I – but that’s because they’re essentially another Amazon brand coming out of a Chinese factory in essence.
For my part, I can’t help but think that it sounds rather like an Australian trying to do a bad New Zealand accent version of Australia’s biggest airline – but that’s maybe just me.
If their logo is the “Fleeing Kongaree”, somebody’s getting SUED.
This also means that there’s a lot of Quntis light bars on sale through that particular retailer; for what it’s worth the model I’ve tested tells me on the box that it’s both the Quntis Monitor Light Bar HY214 on the side but possibly also the Quntis HY0212 on the back of the box, where it also gives me a health warning that’s more than a little alarming:
Nothing to worry about… right?
The Quntis Monitor Light Bar HY214’s primary lighting feature is a strip of adjustable LED lights in a bar formation that hangs on the front of your monitor, though it’s also a model that features rear lighting strips as well if that’s going to matter to your illumination situation.
Attachment is via a hanging weight that hooks to the back of your monitor; I’ve tried it with both an ultrawide 27 inch monitor and 24 inch model without issues, though it wouldn’t fit quite as well if you have a curved gaming monitor – but there, again, Quntis has other models with curvature in mind.
The counterweight is the main detail that will keep it in place, though out of the box it also has a very light level of adhesive pre-applied to it. I don’t feel like that’s going to last all that long or have that much overall effect on its balance.
The Monitor Light Bar HY214 comes with a round remote control used to switch on the primary and secondary lights, as well as adjusting brightness and colour temperature along a dotted dial line. It’s powered by three AA batteries, which is a simple enough touch, though I am left wondering what you’re going to do with it when and if the remote control dies, because there’s no physical controls on the light bar itself – not even an on/off switch.
Powering the Monitor Light Bar HY214 is done via USB C to USB A cable; the primary idea here is that you might hook it into your monitor’s USB ports if it has them, but it’s equally feasible to run it from a computer port or standard USB 5V charger. Or even a battery pack if you were so inclined, and yes, I did test that just to see if it was feasible.
Performance
So why would you want a monitor light bar in the first place when most monitors are capable of getting plenty bright on their own?
The most commonly cited reason – beyond wanting that noir detective/clichéd journalist desk look – is to potentially reduce eye strain by more fully and gently brightening the areas around a screen so that you’re less hit by the brightness of your display.
The Monitor Light Bar HY214 provides that kind of illumination, with a small degree of rotation to allow you to more optimally position the lights so they shine down and not into your eyes.
The dial remote control looks like it’ll supply a lot of delicate tweaking because it’s laid out as though it’s a circular dial, though by default a single tap jumps between four different light intensity or colour temperature patterns. Hold down on the remote and it will more slowly step up levels, though these are more apparent in colour temperature steps than lighting intensity steps. I suspect most users will probably find their comfortable level and be done with one of the four pre-programmed steps.
You’ve also only got control over the front lights; the rear lights operate either on or off, and that’s all.
But does it make a difference?
Here I have an obvious testing limitation, because all I’ve really done here is test with my own eyes in my own office, nowhere else and I don’t have a “control” Alex to do the same work at the same time to compare results.
Mental note: Continue the cloning research, I could really use another me around here.
In terms of my own optical fatigue, the best response to that question is “maybe”.
There’s little doubt in my head that staring at just a screen in a darkened area isn’t great for my eyes, and while I could wish for more granularity in the Monitor Light Bar HY214’s controls, once I got them to a level I liked, it did feel as though I had less eye strain at the end of a given day.
However of course there could well be a placebo effect in play here; am I thinking my eyes are better off because I’ve got something in play that says it’ll help with this?
It’s near impossible to say until those cloning experiments are done, really.
The Monitor Light Bar HY214 does do a decent job of illumination and has had one other side effect; I’m keeping my office desk a little clearer as a result, because it makes me much more aware of how much dust and detritus (and random USB cables) collect there over time. Not sure that’s worth buying a light bar for, however, but it’s definitely a side effect.
Quntis Monitor Light Bar HY214: Alex’s Verdict
Does the Quntis Monitor Light Bar HY214 provide illumination to your monitor and desk?
Sure, at that level this is a product that does what it says it will do, albeit in a somewhat simple style. If you’re thinking that this kind of product might be useful, the first thing I’d suggest you do isn’t to go and buy one (though if you are tempted, the link below helps out ART, for what that’s worth).
No, instead I’d suggest you first look at what tweaks your monitor has within it to adjust brightness and colour temperatures, because ultimately what you’re doing here is trying to reduce the strain and stress of glare on your eyes, and that can be well managed in some situations with just a few adjustments to your monitor’s settings.
That being said, the Quntis Monitor Light Bar HY214 is reasonably priced within its space. I do wish it had physical controls on the light bar itself, however. I’m not likely to use them over the remote control in most cases, but if the remote dies, the whole light bar is rendered useless, which is a big design flaw in my eyes.
Quntis Monitor Light Bar HY214: Pricing and availability
