Not really.
I mean, it’s not surprising, so much of entertainment media has shifted to digital rental/subscription — as a reminder, if you can’t sell it and they can remove it at any time, you don’t own it — and Microsoft’s pretty much already there with Game Pass and Nintendo’s awfully close with Game Key Cards.
It also kills off most hopes of proper backwards compatibility for physical PS5 discs too… and it’s a brave step given the size of most games these days right at a time when storage costs are going through the roof. Thanks AI!
So… Yuck. I’ll be hugging my PS1 discs a little closer tonight and hoping they don’t rot too soon…
